From The Rabbi – Parshat Re’eh 5779

Last Shabbat we were blessed with the wonderful presence of over forty enthusiastic and inspirational members of the Bnei Akiva Australia Youth group, who, together with their Mads (leaders) converged on Brisbane from Melbourne and Perth for their annual Shabbaton.

It is difficult to articulate in words what kind of an amazing impact and atmosphere they created in our Shul. Their energy, enthusiasm for Yiddishkeit, and exemplary behavior was truly inspiring and tremendously uplifting for our community, along with the many leaders and members from various other faith communities who were visiting, as part of Multicultural Queensland Month, to experience a ‘typical’ Friday evening service at a Shul, some of whom enthusiastically joined in the spontaneous dancing at various intervals during the service.

Following the service, a lovey communal dinner for teenageers was enjoyed in the Memorial Hall, at which Bnei Akiva was joined by members of our local Betar movement. Our deep thanks and sincere appreciation is extended to the many communal members who have generously contributed their time, effort and recourses towards a most wonderful and successful Shabbat experience.

On behalf of the Brisbane Hebrew Congregation and all of our community, we extend our sincere appreciation to Bnei Akiva, for their inspiring contribution and we look forward to their next visit.

Much discussion is currently taking place in Qld and around Australia regarding highly sensitive and controversial ethical issues, such as Abortion and VAD – Voluntary Assisted Dying. Please see the statement below regarding the Jewish approach on the important matter regarding Voluntary Asssisted Dying.

As we enter the Holy and introspective month of Elul this evening, let us resolve to utilise this precious and auspicious time to reflect on the truly meaningful aspects of our lives, in preparation for the awesome days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur next month. Please see information below regarding special customs for the month or Elul.
